Jon Lawless

'Out One Night' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Feb 13, 2015

Prolific Ontario songwriter Jon Lawless performs electronic pop as Swim Good, is in the band First Rate People, and is responsible for a string of collaborations, but now he has dropped a surprise solo album under his own name. Out One Night is available digitally right now.

This is somewhere between an album and an EP, as it contains a modest eight songs (many of which clock in at around two minutes long). These jump between delicate folk and beat-boosted synth-pop, meaning that the collection has a fairly wide sonic scope despite its short runtime. There are a number of contributing musicians, so despite being a solo album, this isn't a solitary affair.

Lawless shared the following statement about the release:

Hey friends,

So stoked to be able to share this, the first ever album under my birth name.
These are songs that have stuck with me over the past while and instead of trying to make them perfect (as is the tendency for the producer side of my brain) I thought I'd share them as is. Some are electronic. Others are folkier than folk. My friend Daniela Andrade guests on the single (as do many others throughout the album). Hope you find something to like. Love you all,

Jon
