Ontario songwriter Jon Lawless has been fairly quiet in recent years, mostly pivoting to his project swim good now. Now going by the name Jon Jasper-Lawless, he has shared his first solo single in eight years, "Stay the Same."
The sweet tune is just two minutes in length, its rickety acoustic strums backed by a thumping electronic beat and dreamy, abstract ambience. It's difficult to make out any lyrics, with Lawless's falsetto acting almost as another instrument amidst the collage of acoustic and electronic textures.
Jasper-Lawless said in a statement, "'Stay the Same' is a love song that sort-of (foolishly) laments the fact that change is inevitable. Production-wise, it's layered with over 20 years of sounds that I collected that are meaningful to me. It's intentionally brief and nostalgic. That's my grandma at the beginning, actually."
Hear the song below. Jasper-Lawless will play at Guelph's Silence on September 28.
