In the emptiness of the era following the final episodes of Buffering the Vampire Slayer, Jenny Owen Youngs's definitive Buffy the Vampire Slayer rewatch podcast, singer-songwriter Jenny Hval is paying tribute to the classic '90s series with a new song.
Following the release of her new album Classic Objects, Hval explained that, in improvising "some lyrics that referred to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, probably just because I have watched it many times," she was able to explore how shows like Buffy "can be used as a creative and political rehearsal. An episodic form rehearsing overthrowing a dictatorship, a plutocracy, or theocracy?"
She added: "'Buffy' is not a song about a slayer, a superhero, or feminist icon. If anything, it's a song about hope, but in an understated and episodic way. Because to me, hope is more hopeful when it is presented in a subtle way."
Hval has also shared a video of herself performing Classic Objects' title track and "Cemetery of Splendour." Check both videos out below.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was named among Exclaim!'s Nine TV Series That Deserve a Rewatch.
