Having shared a pair of singles earlier this year, James Blake has now returned with a new EP. You can take in the four-track Before below, alongside a series of visualizers.
Compared to last year's full-length Assume Form, Before finds Blake leaning into the electronic styles he came to make his name with. Recent singles "You're Too Precious" and "Are You Even Real?" do not appear in the tracklisting.
A look at the credits point to work with recent collaborators Dominic Maker of Mount Kimbie and Erick the Architect of Flatbush Zombies, while Blake's partner Jameela Jamil is listed as a producer on three of the four songs.
For a Canadian connection, EP opener "I Keep Calling" lands River Tiber's Tommy Paxton-Beesley, ex-BADBADNOTGOOD player Matthew Tavares, and Charlotte Day Wilson a writing credit each, thanks to its sample of Wilson's "Falling Apart" from 2018's Stone Woman.
Blake's 2020 has included work with slowthai, Flatbush Zombies and Toronto's Mustafa.
