Ahead of touring Canada this spring behind new album The Trip Out, the Crystal Method have shared new single "Post Punk."
The latest from the long-running electronic outfit — now headed up solely by Scott Kirkland following the departure of co-founder Ken Jordan — prominently features a sample of Iggy Pop, clipped from Jim Jarmusch's 2016 Stooges documentary Gimme Danger.
On "Post Punk" — which also features producer, mixer and DJ Hyper and ex-Prodigy drummer Kieron Pepper on guitar — the proto-punk icon is heard explaining, "I don't want to be a punk. I don't want to belong to any of it. I just want to be."
"When Ken and I first met and started DJing in Vegas, in '89 and '90, I'd play Jane's Addiction, the Cure and Depeche Mode, and then some disco," Kirkland recalled to Rolling Stone. "It was all about getting that crowd at that moment to have a good time. So that line of Iggy's about how he doesn't want to be one thing — that fits with our perspective on music. We never wanted to be pigeonholed and told we were one genre. We love being different things."
As for Iggy's thoughts on "Post Punk," Kirkland added, "I haven't heard from him directly, but we heard he likes the song. A friend of mine said, 'Iggy just retweeted your post about the release!'" You can hear the single below alongside a mesmerizing visualizer.
The Trip Out is set to arrive April 15, and follows the Crystal Method's 2018 outing The Trip Home. Find the group's complete 2022 Canadian tour itinerary here.
