Dan Mangan has been one of the leaders of the Canadian music community under coronavirus quarantine, thanks to his concert company Side Door and its ticketed livestreams. Now, the Vancouver singer-songwriter is continuing his busy 2020 by releasing the covers album Thief.
A few of these covers date back to 2019, including his versions of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion," Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Airplane over the Sea" and Lauryn Hill's "Ex-Factor." It's now been expanded into a nine-song album with additions like "Love You Madly" by Cake and "Hang with Me" by Robyn.
The album also has some extra Canadian indie flavour: Mangan covers Yukon Blonde's "Stairway," Amy Millan shows up on a version of Bob Marley's "Chances Are," and Zeus play on a rendition of Elliott Smith's "Waltz No. 2 (XO)."
Hear Thief below. It's out through Arts & Crafts.
Mangan will perform an all-covers livestream this Saturday (November 21) at 3 p.m. EST. Tickets are available through Side Door.
