Call it a comeback. Montreal rockers Chocolat are set to return with Tss Tss on October 21 and Exclaim.ca has got you covered with an advanced stream of the new record.
After releasing and touring a self-titled EP back in 2007, Chocolat went on hiatus in 2010. Frontman Jimmy Hunt went the solo route, but in late 2013, he started throwing around some rudimentary electronic ideas that became the foundation for a reunion. Jamming together again, Ysael Pépin, Brian Hildebrand, Martin Chouinard and newbie Emmanuel Ethier came together with Hunt to make Tss Tss.
Described in a recent press release as a "truly no-bullshit, full-blown, rock'n'roll extravaganza," the album delivers the rock, while experimenting with Hunt's electro-tinged sequences.
The new album was recorded at Montreal's Studio Victor and the process was a quick one. Recording live off the floor around a central mic, the band stuck with the second or third take of most tracks, allowing the members to toy with structure but still capture a raw performance sound.
Hunt's lyrics don't overreach for poetry, instead embracing an "incandescent cubist prose" that goes after themes like "the fire in our souls, twisted sex, the secrets of civilizations, shady Walt Disney, and the beauty of the end of the world." The eight songs come together into a neat, retro-inspired package, and you can hear it here first.
