Scott Middleton, guitarist and co-founder of Toronto hardcore outfit Cancer Bats, has announced his departure from the band.
In a statement shared on social media, Middleton (pictured far left) shared that he had reached the decision to part ways with Cancer Bats "after much consideration and an amazing 17 years together," adding, "After recent life events, now, more than ever it feels the time is right for me to prioritize my family, personal growth/health, and focus my music career toward helping other bands and artists through my experience and passion for producing, mastering, and mixing."
"I look back on all the records we made, the countless tours & shows, the accomplishments we achieved together, and memories we've shared, with immense pride and gratitude. I have nothing but love and support for Mike, Jaye, and Liam and wish them all the best in the future," Middleton wrote.
"I also wish to extend a massive thanks to all the crew & bands we hit the road with, the amazing PR teams, labels, agents, managers, producers, venues, artists, photographers, and journalists we ever worked with; and of course, all the incredible friends and supporters of CB worldwide, without whom, out [sic] career and success would not have been possible."
Middleton also revealed that he is currently building a recording studio East of Toronto, "on the Bay of Quinte, in the Belleville/[Prince Edward County] region, which will be ready in the next month or so." You can find his complete statement below.
In a respective statement, Cancer Bats confirmed that remaining 2021 tour dates have been cancelled following Middleton's departure, ahead of their 2022 tour with Comeback Kid and A Wilhelm Scream.
"We wish Scott all the best in his future endeavors. This is by no means the end of Cancer Bats," the band write. "The 3 of us will continue on this sonic path of destruction, heading into the studio soon to start tracking CB7, Due to Scotts departure, we are going to be postponing all shows for the rest of the year. Thank you for your understanding and we can wait to see you all next year!!!! Thanks to Scott for being our Brother in Metal the last 17 years. Many hails to Scoeb the Mayor."
Following time as a member of Toronto metal outfit At the Mercy of Inspiration, Middleton and vocalist Liam Cormier co-founded Cancer Bats in 2004. Middleton would produce and engineer the band's 2005 self-titled debut EP, ahead of releasing the Gavin Brown-produced full-length debut Birthing the Giant in 2006.
Middleton is credited with additional engineering on what now marks his final studio album with Cancer Bats, 2018's surprise release The Spark That Moves. He also mixed both volumes of the band's acoustic Separation Sessions EPs, the second of which arrived last month.
