Fresh off of Dune's opening weekend, it has been announced that the second instalment of the sci-fi film helmed by Denis Villeneuve has been greenlit.
Today, Legendary Entertainment announced that Dune: Part 2 would go ahead, with Villeneuve returning as director, producer and co-screenwriter.
Deadline adds that the film's theatrical release is set for October 20, 2023, noting how "theatrical" indicates that "no day-and-date HBO Max release plan is in the mix" for those with the service outside of Canada.
"Thank you to those who have experienced [Dune] so far, and those who are going in the days and weeks ahead," Legendary wrote. "We're excited to continue the journey!"
Dune captured the No. 1 box office spot in both Canadian and US theatres this weekend, generating $41 million in ticket sales from its North American theatrical debut.
