It's release day for Montreal experimental post-rockers Yoo Doo Right; their third full-length From the Heights of Our Pastureland is out today through Mothland, and you can hear it below.
The band "aimed for something cinematic, but not in the way of a score, rather something more experiential," on the album, opting still — like on their sophomore effort A Murmur, Boundless to the East, one of Exclaim!'s best Canadian albums of the 2020s — to write sprawling, near-double-digit-minute tracks, building to epic crescendos and exercising their darkest tension-and-release proclivities.
They shared of the record in a statement:
We wanted to create music that could ignite drive in oneself, hopefully something of significance in and of itself. While we're really not here to force understanding on people, for us the predominant themes are anxiety and patience, the storm of colonialism, the collapse of capitalism and the massive undertaking it is to rebuild with past mistakes taken into deep consideration. It draws a parallel between natural disaster and social disaster, the experience of watching an impending destructive storm roll in and watching an impending societal disaster unfold under our current colonial, capitalistic frameworks. Hopefully, folks can give themselves time to make some sensible thoughts of the album on their own.
The band will celebrate the release of From the Heights of Our Pastureland with a double album launch party on December 6 at Théâtre Plaza in Montreal with Victime — whose sophomore album En conversation avec arrived in October — and We Owe featuring Brian Chase (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs). From there, they'll launch into a tour of Quebec and Ontario in the early new year, hitting Gatineau, Quebec City, Ottawa, Sherbrooke and other towns along the way.
