Waxahatchee Gets Sober on New Album 'Saint Cloud'

She's also shared the first single "Fire" and revealed a North American tour

Waxahatchee has announced plans for a new album called Saint Cloud. The record from the artist born Katie Crutchfield is due out on March 27 via Merge. Right now, though, she's already given us the teaser track "Fire."

Marking the follow-up to 2017's Out in the Storm, the new record was written in the immediate aftermath of Crutchfield's decision to get sober. It hears her reflecting on herself from the perspective of different places — from Barcelona to Tennessee to her hometown of Birmingham to New York and beyond.

Sonically, the album hears Crutchfield ditching the brash, distorted guitars that have defined Waxahatchee's sound in the past. Stripped back, the quieter, Americana-tinged new style apparently allows the singing and songwriting to shine through.

She was accompanied for the recording by a backing band consisting of Bobby Colombo and Bill Lennox of Bonny Doon, as well as Josh Kaufman and Nick Kinsey. Saint Cloud was produced by Brad Cook.

The first song to arrive from the album is "Fire," which has arrived alongside a new video. Crutchfield came up with the idea for the song while driving from Memphis into West Memphis.

"The song's written by me, to myself. It's about the internal dialogue of shame surrounding mistakes you've made in the past and how we spiral and beat ourselves up when we slip," she said in a statement. "It's meant to be a bit of a personal pep talk. If I can love myself unconditionally, then I can move through the world a little easier. If I can accept that I only have a partial view of the universe, and that I can't know everything or control much of anything, then I can breathe a little easier, take better care of myself, and be closer to my own truth."
