The Youth Have Discovered Kate Bush Thanks to 'Stranger Things'

The fourth season features a plot line revolving around Bush's 1985 classic "Running Up That Hill"

There's never a bad time to discover Kate Bush, and it seems like a whole lot of bright-eyed Gen-Zers had the enviable experience of hearing her music for the first time this weekend thanks to the new season of Stranger Things.

Some light spoilers ahead, so tread carefully if you care about that kind of thing. Part one of the much-anticipated fourth season premiered on Friday (May 27), and its fourth episode includes a plot point revolving around Max's (that's Sadie Sink) love of "Running Up That Hill."

Earlier in the season, we're shown that "Running Up That Hill" is Max's favourite song, and has been helping her through some tough shit (as Kate Bush's music is wont to do). In fourth episode "Dear Billy," the only way for Max to be pulled from a potentially deadly blackout state (caused by an evil creature dude named Vecna who feeds on the shame and guilt of teens) is to play the song on loop on her Walkman. This leads to a scene in which Max levitates in a graveyard while "Running Up That Hill" plays, which apparently caused a bunch of people to sprint over to their streaming service of choice.

As reported by The Wrap, the song's inclusion in the episode has sent it back to the charts 37 years after its release. It's currently chilling at No. 1 on the iTunes singles chart and No. 13 on Spotify's global daily chart.

Some Bush oldheads have been getting huffy on the internet over kids discovering Kate Bush in the year 2022, but as has been previously stated, there's never a wrong time to have your whole life changed by Hounds of Love.

Later in the season, Max asks Caleb McLaughlin's Lucas "Will it still work? Or will Kate Bush lose her magic power or something?" Lucas replies, "Kate Bush? Never." He's clearly right about that! Long live Kate Bush.
