Following their star-studded visuals for "Ouch," the Tragically Hip are continuing to build their Saskadelphia cinematic universe with the arrival of new video for EP cut "Not Necessary."
The Sara Basso-directed video for "Not Necessary" plays out as a prequel to the events of "Ouch," starring Schitt's Creek's Emily Hampshire as a heroine left high and dry by her biker boyfriend, who took the money and ran after robbing a bank.
From there, it's a fresh start for Hampshire's character, inspired by films like Something Wild, Thelma and Louise, and Run Lola Run. Not unlike the "Ouch" video, this latest clip also contains plenty of Hip-themed easter eggs scattered throughout its frames.
"I obviously love the song, but I also fell in LOVE with the concept for the video. It references all my favourite movies and has such a unique style of its own," Hampshire shares in a statement. "Sara's directorial vision and everyone's creative input made this such a special project that pairs beautifully with the Hip's iconic music."
Director Basso added, "I wrote this video treatment solely for Emily Hampshire and was beyond ecstatic when she said yes. She was a total dream to work with — she brought such a positive, fun attitude to set and was an amazing collaborator. In fact, it was her idea to have me pick her up at the end of the video (got my Hitchcock cameo, in a vintage Porsche no less)."
Saskadelphia, which features "Not Necessary" alongside five previously unreleased tracks written by the band in 1990, can now also be found in a deluxe anniversary edition of their sophomore LP Road Apples, arriving November 12 in vinyl, CD and Blu-ray audio editions via Universal Music Canada.
