Skiifall has new music on the way. The St. Vincent-born, Montreal-raised rapper announced that his upcoming EP WOIIYOIE TAPES VOL. 2 will arrive on April 28.
The project follows Skiifall's debut, the 2021 three-track WOIIYOIE TAPES Vol. 1 — one of Exclaim!'s best EPs released that year. The prequel to the upcoming EP featured standout track "Lost Angeles," which set the tone for Skiifall's future music with its islands-influenced melody and earworm hook.
Skiifall has yet to reveal the record's tracklist, but we do know that it features contributions from Wondagurl, DJ Dahi, Master Zibs and more. The collaborators come together to illustrate Skiifall's life experiences through song, focusing on police violence in Black communities. "It's always been important for me to talk about because I get stopped all the time," he said in a press release. "It's so scary, that moment when you're surrounded by these cops and you don't know what they are going to do."
The EP's theme was shaped by the loss of his friend Nicous D'Andre Spring who died in custody after being assaulted by guards. The artist wanted to respond with music rather than social media activism because he felt it would be a more effective way to advocate for change.
"I didn't want to post a picture of him or anything," Skiifall explained. "I want to talk about it in my music because millions of people are going to listen to it. I didn't choose to take part in this narrative — it was given to me by the government and the schools they send us to, the rules they give us. They keep us on a path where it's difficult to succeed."
News of WOIIYOIE TAPES VOL. 2 arrives alongside its lead single "Yuteman Denis," which features haunting vocals from fellow Montreal native Charlotte Cardin. The accompanying Adrian Villagomez-directed visuals follow a young Black boy who becomes increasingly disillusioned with various facets of his life as the video progresses.
