A rental home in L.A. that New Pornographer Carl Newman is currently staying at was broken into last night (November 9). Fortunately for the singer-songwriter, he wasn't around when the crime took place, but he came home to find a window smashed and some of his belongings missing.
"Someone threw a potted plant through the window of our LA pad and stole our iPads," Newman tweeted of the incident. "Some people are just no damn good."
While the loss of property was a drag, the silver lining is that Newman backed up whatever was on the iPads onto his online iCloud account before they were lifted. It's unclear whether the contents were just his iTunes collection, or some new material he had been working on.
"We're lucky the thieves only took our iPads," he added. "Everything was saved in iCloud. I was praying for iCloud to work."
Spinner spoke with Matador Records' Nils Bernstein, who assured everything is all right, saying of the situation: "It was a place he and his wife were renting in L.A. -- the bottom floor of a house -- and someone broke a window while they were out, snatched their iPads, and that's it."
While Bernstein added that no passports, money, clothes or IDs were nicked in the "quick smash-n-grab," he does admit that considering the set-up of the rental residence, it could have been a planned heist.
"It was creepy, since that part of the house isn't visible from the street so it seems someone had cased the joint."
Looking to put the incident behind him, Newman seemed thankful no one was hurt and appreciated a quick set up at a nearby hotel.
"Thank you to @matadorrecords and Beggars for putting us up in their luxurious guest suite, and for the fancy dinner up on a Glendale hilltop," he tweeted earlier today (November 10).
