Mauno

'Rough Master' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Aug 18, 2015

Experimental Halifax trio Mauno are set to release Rough Master later this week, but before it officially arrives, Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to the new album in its entirety.

The eight-track offering hears the band decontructing traditional pop music into subversive and surprising three-minute songs. A press release describes the record as a "study of limitation," testing the boundaries of the media through which the music is recorded and presented. Mastered using both analog and digital techniques, the songs evoke tension by highlighting how "a sliver of tape both constrains and defines a song."

But despite the technical tinkering and unconventional approach to pop music, the band's self-produced effort still manages to deliver a collection of catchy, palatable — yet thought-provoking — tunes.

Rough Master is officially out on August 19, but you can give it an advanced spin in the player below right now. Scroll past the group's upcoming tour dates and hit play to hear it.
