Slinking into the final spot of Lawnya Vawnya's Wednesday night (May 23) spectacular was Halifax's Loveland. Although the crowd had thinned a bit following Park Day, those that remained were eager to get down to something like minimalist Prince, packed with flourishes of funk and decorated by synth ambience that created whimsical, fantastical and dreamy atmospheres behind them.
Certainly, no one told singer Robert Loveless that it was time for anyone to wind down — or if they did, he'd shushed them with a snap of his wrist and then slithered, ached and shivered onto the stage, ending up drenched in sweat before they'd hit the halfway point. With burning lights and red, pink and polka dot umbrellas bearing down on him from above the stage, the band's hazy low-key soul provided a strange, Lynchian verve to the night.
