While the debate about music criticism continues thanks to Ed Sheeran, Los Campesinos! are taking matters into their own hands. The Welsh indie poppers want to hire music journalists to write about them.
The band shared that they've faced challenges in getting coverage as an act that's been around for many years (since 2006 in their case), and said they're hoping to foster a broader community by directly paying writers for their work, which they will publish.
"Our recent experiences are that very few outlets will cover our band anymore (no hard feelings, I get it!)," the band tweeted. "But we want to continue to foster this community outside of social media, and it seems we've an ever-growing fanbase that want to hear about our band."
Their aim to source writers directly also stems from a desire to pay writers fairly for their work and encourage them not to write "for clicks" out of necessity: "We'd like to work directly with writers, pay them well and on time, to publish in-depth pieces to be enjoyed by fans, outside of the restrictive 'album cycle' PR pattern. Maybe a bad idea? Could be fun and rewarding though, let's see!"
In all fairness, the last time Exclaim! covered Los Campesinos! was for the 10th-anniversary tour of their first two albums, Hold On Now, Youngster… and We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed. We did, however, give their 2017 record Sick Scenes a 9/10, and it still holds up.
Interested music writers can reach out to the band via their email address.
