Back in 2004, Jack White produced an LP for country legend Loretta Lynn, the excellent Van Lear Rose. Now, that album is getting a deluxe vinyl reissue for the latest instalment of Third Man Records' quarterly Vault subscription package.
Van Lear Rose was released back in 2004, and while it was initially only on CD, it got a vinyl pressing through Third Man in 2011. The label's online store, however, lists it as out of stock.
This pressing is significantly fancier than the prior vinyl edition, since it comes on gold-coloured vinyl with the previously unreleased bonus track "Just to Have You Back" from the album recording sessions. There's also gold foil embossing on the snazzy-looking sleeve, plus an embossed postcard.
Beyond that, the package comes with a White Stripes 7-inch containing two Loretta Lynn covers from their archives: there's a studio version of "Rated X" from 2000 and a live recording on "Whispering Sea" from 2005. These have been pressed on white wax. This version of "Rated X" had been intended as the B-side of their cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene," and it's different from the live version that the White Stripes used as the B-side to their 2001 single "Hotel Yorba." The package is rounded out by a DVD, filmed this year by Brad Holland, in which White and Lynn revisit the album, recount its creation and reflect on its aftermath. All this comes with a Van Lear Rose enamel pin.
The subscription package costs $60 US ($75 CDN) every quarter. It can be purchased here until April 30.
Van Lear Rose has a 97 percent rating on the critical aggregation website Metacritic, putting it in third place on the its all-time high scores list.
The album includes Lynn's duet with White, "Portland, Oregon," a video for which can be seen below. Many of White's regular collaborators performed on Van Lear Rose, including bassist Jack Lawrence, drummer Patrick Keeler and singer-guitarist Dan John Miller.
