A previously unreleased version of Mac Miller's "The Star Room" has arrived, marking the 10-year anniversary of the late artist's sophomore LP Watching Movies with the Sound Off.
"The Star Room (OG Version)," which you can hear alongside a Danae Gosset-directed visual below, appears on the newly released 10th anniversary edition of Watching Movies, out today via Rostrum Records.
Gosset's animated video follows a character racing across brightly-coloured landscapes, eventually ending up among the stars. The director shares in a statement, "My goal was to capture the essence of a transformative journey while maintaining a childlike curiosity towards exploring different worlds."
"We employed a diverse range of physical mediums such as paint, color pencils, gouache, and more," Gosset continues. "The production involved a combination of 3D animation, 2D animation, footage integration, and VFX, all working together to support a surrealist vision through a handmade vivid, textural, and colorful world."
Released in June 2013, Watching Movies with the Sound Off features collaborations with Earl Sweatshirt, Ab-Soul, Action Bronson, ScHoolboy Q, Tyler, the Creator, Flying Lotus, Diplo and more, and was widely considered an ambitious step beyond the "frat rap" label Miller's earlier releases were saddled with.
In an 8/10 review of the album, Exclaim! called Watching Movies "an effort that at once silences his detractors and rewards his faithful following."
