Last month, Joni Mitchell shared plans to open the vault for a new series of archival releases, and she's now shared a demo version of her first original song.
"Day After Day" comes from a 1965 demo tape the songwriter recorded for Elektra Records co-founder Jac Holzman. Mitchell sings on the first verse, "Day after day / Miles and miles of railroad track / Night after night / Hummin' of the wheels."
"It was my firstborn," Mitchell said of the song. "I didn't know whether it was a good song or a bad song. It was just the first one that came out."
The Holzman demo also includes "What Will You Give Me," "Let It Be Me," "The Student Song" and "Like the Lonely Swallow," all of which will appear in 5-CD box set The Early Years (1963-1967).
