Last year, Montreal's Gulfer dropped the double single "Greetings" / "Barely," and today sees them let another one loose on the world with "Clean."
Attached to a video directed and edited by Jordano Aguzzi and Vincent Ford, "Clean" is a big, surging slice of emo-influenced indie rock that tells the story of someone who goes on the lam after killing their boss.
"Nicki ties up looser ends / Goes to work and then comes home again / When you work all day and watch the boss get paid / No nice heart lasts long in this game," guitarist and vocalist Joe Therriault sings.
In a statement about the video, Therriault said:
The choice for us to set the video by the pool was a way for us to twist some of the song's darker lyrics (There were two ports in the storm / fish him out in his uniform) into something bright and upbeat – that tension between the lyrics and the instrumentation is part of the song itself.
