Toronto four-piece Frigs are the latest signees to Canadian indie label Arts & Crafts, and they've just announced plans to release their debut EP. Slush will arrive on June 10.
Having built a reputation for their visceral live sets, the band bring together influences that range from the emotionally raw, grunge-esque sound of PJ Harvey to Sonic Youth's early post-punk material, all woven together by the mesmerizing vocals of frontwoman Bria Salmena. A press release notes that her "vocal growl can unexpectedly give way to a hushed whisper," as "languid drones boil over into guttural and searing tones."
That evocative sound permeates the new EP, which features four new tunes. Adhering to the DIY aesthetic of Toronto-based collective Heretical Objects Cooperative, the band turned their apartment into a studio and wrote, recorded and mixed the new tracks there without outside help.
You can hear the first sampling of the new stuff by watching the video for "God Hates a Coward" below. Scroll past the Slush tracklisting and Frigs' upcoming live shows to give it a watch.
