Exclaim!'s Staff Picks: emmersonHALL's Self-titled Debut Finds Him Smack Dab in the Middle of the Mess

BY Megan LaPierrePublished Jul 21, 2023

There's a creaking, buzzing sense of homespun familiarity to the debut from emmersonHALL, the alt-folk project from Ottawa (by way of Lindsay) singer-songwriter Cole Hallman.

On the self-titled eight-track collection produced by Michael Watson (chemical club, fanclubwallet, Preloved), Hallman narrates the likely growing pains of high school friends having money and/or babies, the endless stream of $5 coffees and window panes overlaid in dusty sepia tones with his unvarnished, conversational approach. It's a fitting introduction to the singer-songwriter, who depicts himself lying face-down on the asphalt in the album artwork — smack dab in the middle of the mess that is becoming.
