We Used to Call Drake on His Cellphone — and They're Now Being Thrown at Him

The rap star is the latest artist to face a flying object mid-performance

Drake recently kicked off his It's All a Blur tour of North America, and it gives us no great pleasure to report that one of the trek's early shows has established a Canadian angle for the concerning trend of concert projectiles.

Footage has emerged of things going from "Hotline Bling" to "Hotline Fling" during a performance at Chicago's United Center (July 5), one of two stops in the city on Drake's tour alongside Her Loss collaborator 21 Savage.

As seen in the clip below, a more subdued moment of the show is interrupted by a flying device that connects with Drake's wrist. Rather than pull a Camp Flog Gnaw or brandish a T-shirt cannon, he gives his arm a quick look and keeps performing.

While Drake avoided sustaining a Bebe Rexha-level injury, we once again find ourselves asking: why is this happening at all? For comedy? Please, give your head a shake.

Let's recap the past year of deeply unfunny behaviour: Harry Styles gets hit in the balls by a water bottle (at Chicago's United Center, no less); Steve Lacy had a disposable camera thrown at him; P!nk was forced to contend with someone launching their mother's ashes; Kelsea Ballerini was struck with a projectile bracelet; and Ava Max was slapped by someone who threw themselves on stage.

Drake and 21 Savage will play a second date at the United Center in Chicago tonight, and here's hoping those in attendance enjoy the evening responsibly. Canadian shows on the It's All a Blur tour have been set for Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
