Man Who Threw Phone at Bebe Rexha's Face Thought "It Would Be Funny"

The alleged assailant, Nicolas Malvagna of New Jersey, was taken into custody and was arraigned on Monday evening

This past Sunday (June 18), Bebe Rexha was struck in the face by a cellphone during her show at Pier 17 in New York City. The phone was thrown at the pop star from the audience and hit Rexha just above the eye, giving her a shiner and requiring her to get three stitches. The man who's been charged with throwing the phone says he did it "because it would be funny."

As reported by Rolling Stone, a preliminary investigation by New York City police "determined that a 27-year-old male intentionally threw a cell phone" at Rexha — the alleged assailant, Nicolas Malvagna of New Jersey, was taken into custody and arraigned on Monday (June 20) evening.

Malvagna's been charged with two counts of assault in the third degree for the bizarre attack, as well as one count of harassment in the second degree, one count of aggravated harassment in the second degree and one count of attempted assault in the third degree.

According to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, Malvagna — who was identified by fellow audience members almost immediately after whipping the phone and taken into custody by venue security — stated, "I was trying to see if I could hit her with the phone at the end of the show because it would be funny."

This guy obviously has some very specific issues he needs to work through, but this whole saga is a reminder not to throw shit on stage while someone is performing — even if it's in good faith (which clearly wasn't the case here), it's ultimately unsafe and disrespectful.

Rexha seems to be generally fine (she for real could've lost her eye), and has posted a TikTok of her bruising and gnarly eyebrow cut with the caption, "im good."
