Diana Krall

Live In Rio

BY Nereida FernandesPublished Dec 16, 2009

Live in Rio is the perfect accompaniment for fans of Diana Krall's Quiet Nights. The two-set disc has footage from concerts in Rio (disc one), Lisbon, Madrid and the Toronto Becel Benefit Concert (disc two). Extra features include videos for "Boy from Ipanema" and "Quiet Nights," an intimate, four-song acoustic performance on a hotel rooftop in Rio and a conversation so personal with Krall you'll feel like you interviewed her yourself. For the Rio concert, Krall is backed by the incredible talents of acoustic bassist John Clayton, guitarist Anthony Wilson and Jeff Hamilton on drums. She's also supported by percussionist Paulinho DeCosta and the Rio De Janeiro Orchestra. Krall's signature, laidback, breathy croon is only overshadowed by her emotionally expressive piano playing ― the camera close-ups of her fingers' choreography on the keys make for a mesmerizing treat. She interprets 18 songs, made up of Bossa Nova classics and some of her favourite Tin Pan Alley standards, to a crowd of thousands of Cariocas, who sing along on some of the songs in a bilingual duet of sorts, bringing members of the trio to tears. Beautiful to watch and listen to, it's the kind of DVD you want playing in the background at your next cocktail party.
