Dana Sipos is set to unveil her third LP Roll Up the Night Sky later this week, but Exclaim! is streaming it in its entirety, so you can hear it a few days early.
Originally hailing from Yellowknife, the singer-songwriter has been living rather nomadically for the past few years. For her latest album, though, she settled down in Montreal to record at Richard Reed Perry's home studio with producer Jordy Walker.
The result is a collection of songs that weaves together "fragments of stories, myths and dreams into the imagery of the Northern Territories." And while the North may be her home, Sipos has spent the last while touring the country in unconventional ways — by tall ship and bicycle, with plans to travel by canoe and train currently in the works. Her free spirit and lack of conformity come through in the new songs, as well.
Gentle folk numbers get injected with non-traditional twists courtesy of Sipos' innovative guitar work and the inclusion of instruments like the bouzouki and mandolin. Thematically, it's a study in contrasts — from opener "Old Sins" to "Holy People" and back to closer "Full Moon Sinners," Sipos toys with opposites. Juxtaposition rears its head again with "Morningside" and "Night Sky." But despite the push and pull between good and bad, light and dark, the songs all work together with each other in one gorgeous sounding package.
