Belle and Sebastian to Release Surprise Album 'Late Developers' This Week

Hear "I Don't Know What You See in Me" from their second LP is less than a year

Having teased something new, Glaswegian twee conquerers Belle and Sebastian have announced their second full-length in less than a year. The surprise album Late Developers is out this Friday, May 13, through Matador Records, and the single "I Don't Know What You See in Me" is out now.

A press release calls Late Developers the upbeat, "sun-kissed cousin" to last year's slightly more contemplative A Bit of Previous. The track "When the Cynics Stare Back from the Wall" comes from the era of the '90s prior to the band's first album, 1996's Tigermilk, and it was made with contributions from Camera Obscura's Tracyanne Campbell. The opening track, "Juliet Naked," appears to take its name from a Nick Hornby book.

As for the new single "I Don't Know What You See in Me," it's a co-write with pop producer Wuh Oh (a.k.a. Peter Ferguson), and it's significantly more pop-friendly than your average B&S song. It features that snippet of synth music the band teased last week. Hear it below, and scroll past that to see the Late Developers tracklist.

A band bio, written by Jeff Rosenstock, notes that the album isn't simply a collection of leftovers from A Bit of Previous, although it was recorded during the same studio sessions.

Belle and Sebastian will tour North America this spring following a couple of health-related cancellations.
