Not even a month after wondering if A24's indie cinema reign was coming to an end, the answer is assuredly "yes" with news that an Elon Musk biopic is in development at the company with Darren Aronofsky attached to direct.
Following initial reports of the project from Puck News, Variety notes that the project's screenplay will be based on Walter Isaacson's authorized biography of the controversial tech mogul, which arrived in September.
Variety cites sources who say A24 beat out a field of studios and filmmakers in "heated competition" to win the rights to option Isaacson's book. Previously, the author's 2011 biography Steve Jobs served as the basis of the 2015 Oscar-nominated film of the same name from director Danny Boyle, which starred Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet.
Director Aronofsky is, of course, coming off helming Oscar contender The Whale. His other credits include Requiem for a Dream, Mother! and Black Swan — the last of which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Director.
The terminally online Musk — who is also the CEO and CTO of SpaceX, and chairman and CTO of X Corp — made sure to share his reaction to the news on X (formerly Twitter), posting of the news, "Glad Darren is doing it. He is one of the best."
Until more details surrounding the Musk film emerge, here are some things we're thinking about: who will be cast as Grimes? Will the Cyberpunk 2077 recording session, the relentless booing and Twitter's office-wide auction be dramatized? What about his financially ruinous SNL appearance? Here's hoping Aronofsky stays faithful in his portrayal.
