It's been revealed today that Troye Sivan and TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe will be starring in the Weeknd's upcoming HBO show The Idol.
News first broke about The Idol back in June, but it's now been officially picked up. Created by the Weeknd alongside Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim, the scripted series will follow an up-and-coming female pop star who becomes romantically entangled with a self-help guru/cult leader. It sounds very much up the Weeknd's alley.
Rounding out the cast are Lily-Rose Depp, Anne Heche, Suzanna Son, Steve Zissis, Melanie Liburd, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren and Nico Hiraga.
Every episode will be directed by Amy Seimetz, with Joe Epstein co-writing and executive producing.
"When the multi-talented Abel 'the Weeknd' Tesfaye, Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson brought us The Idol, it was clear their subversive, revelatory take on the cult of the music industry was unlike anything HBO had ever done before," Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming, said in a statement.
In October, the Weeknd told fans that his new album is complete, but missing "a couple characters that are key to the narrative." Most recently, he appeared on Rosalía's new single "La Fama."
