Mary Wilson, co-founder of the iconic Motown group the Supremes, has died. Wilson passed away suddenly in her Las Vegas home, Associated Press reports, but no cause of death was given. She was 76.
Mary Wilson was born in Greenville, MS, on March 6, 1944. She moved to Chicago, then Detroit where she met her collaborator Florence Ballard in a school talent show. Wilson, Ballard and Diana Ross teamed up to form the Primettes before changing their name to the Supremes and signing with Motown in 1961.
The Supremes' myriad hits included "Baby Love," "Stop! In the Name of Love," "You Can't Hurry Love" and many others. The group were also the inspiration for the fictional story of Dreamgirls.
At the time of her death, Wilson had been working on some solo music with Universal, including the finishing touches on her lost 1979 album Red Hot.
