Following last year's FICTION EP, SUUNS have returned to details a new album. The Witness will arrive on October 30 via Secret City Records/Joyful Noise Recordings.
The eight-track The Witness follows SUUNS' 2018 LP Felt and was self-recorded and self-produced by the trio over the course of last year. It marks the band's first since the 2018 departure of Max Henry as a full-time member.
Sonically, The Witness is said to be "generous, stripped-down and affecting" compared to prior efforts. In a statement, SUUNS' Joseph Yarmush explained, "We wanted to calm down a bit, even during the mixing process: our notes were simply 'you have to settle down.' I couldn't technically explain what I meant by that, but the songs needed to settle down. We were basically trying to hold back all the bombastic tendencies and make things sound very subtle."
Ben Shemie added, "There's always this restraint in SUUNS: the question of 'how long can we hold off?' I think it's beautiful that way because it always brings out something unexpected. But if you're willing to stick with us — at a show or through our music in general — it will pay off. It might take a while to get there, but we will drop a beat for you eventually. I love that we've been able to stick to the minimal side of things, and just let it breathe."
"Witness Protection," which Henry worked on in his new role as a studio collaborator, arrives with today's news alongside an accompanying video from director Antoine Dasseville which you can find below.
SUUNS are also set to hit the road on tour later this year, beginning their trek with six stops in Canada. Four September dates in Quebec will be followed by October stops in Ottawa and Toronto. You can find their itinerary below.
