UK five-piece Squid have returned with plans for their debut album after the release of their 2019 Exclaim! favourite Town Centre EP. Up next, they've got Bright Green Field on the way, which is set to arrive on May 7 through Warp Records.
The 11-track release finds the band incorporating field recordings, a 30-person choir, multiple guest features and a string ensemble. For the album, they're also reuniting with Black Midi producer Dan Carey, who helped put out their previous EP through Speedy Wunderground.
"The tracks illustrate the places, events, and architecture that exist within it," frontman Ollie Judge said of the forthcoming record. "Previous releases were playful and concerned with characters, whereas this album is darker and more concerned with the place — the emotional depth of the music has deepened."
Today, the band have shared "Narrator," the record's eight-minute lead single, which was inspired by the film A Long Day's Journey into Night and features singer Martha Skye-Murphy. The song also comes with its own drone-shot/3D-animated video, which was directed by Felix Green.
"The song follows a man who is losing the distinction between memory, dream, and reality and how you can often mold your memories of people to fit a narrative that benefits your ego," the band said of the track in a statement. "Martha Skye-Murphy made the point that the unreliable narrator is, more often than not, a male who wishes to portray women as submissive characters in their story. After some discussions with Martha, she thought it'd be a good idea that she play the part of the woman wanting to break free from the dominating story the male has set."
