Class is in session: Chrystia Cabral's SPELLLING project is back with a new album, led by the double single "Cherry" and "Under the Sun."
SPELLLING & the Mystery School will provide its teachings on August 25 via Sacred Bones. It follows 2021's The Turning Wheel.
Produced in its entirety by Cabral and recorded with her touring band, the new LP consists of richly re-envisioned versions of songs from the SPELLLING catalogue. Its title was drawn from the singer-songwriter's father's fascination with early Christian mythics, and also ties into Cabral's former profession as an elementary school art teacher.
"When I was with the kids, we were making art, sharing information and creating these hypothetical worlds," she explained in a press release. "We're just jumping into these realms where there are no real rules."
Cabral continued, "With this album, I wanted to capture the ways that these songs have morphed. They're like my children all grown up in a different stage of their lives, and I want to celebrate that. I'm proud to say it's my favourite thing I have created so far, and working on it has really opened up new exciting visions for the future of the SPELLLING sound."
The double single sees the artist embrace a fuller orchestral soundscape grown from the roots of her previous sparse instrumental renderings.
