Dare I say, the hallowed titular phrase of "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" has never rung more true than today: Shania Twain has been honoured with her very own one-of-a-kind Barbie doll.
Mattel, Inc. has named Twain, among eight honourees — including Kylie Minogue, Viola Davis and Helen Mirren — as a Barbie role model for 2024, which the company has been doing in conjunction with International Women's Day (March 8) since 2018. This year's honours also coincide with Barbie's 65th birthday on March 9.
Not available for retail, the women chosen to receive the designation have broken down barriers and inspired other women to follow their dreams. "Girls in particular need to be able to see women telling their own stories, writing their own narratives, living out their own dreams, and we're happy to honour these women in celebration of Barbie's 65th," Kim Culmone, senior vice president of Barbie design, told People.
From her humble beginnings in Timmins, ON, to country-pop superstardom and style icon status, Twain certainly foots the bill. Her doll features one of the signature looks from the "Man! I Feel Like a Woman," music video, updated with the pink hair she frequently appeared in during last year's Queen of Me tour — and has since seemingly embraced fully.
Perhaps coincidental, but the pink locks were obviously well-timed, coinciding with the rosy-hued obsession that has accompanied Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie.
"What I love most about [the movie], which is also what I did with the song and video, was, 'OK, let's not diminish the aesthetics. Let’s be true to our Barbie beauty, our beauty aesthetics, the attention to detail in all its Barbie glory and still say something meaningful,'" the singer-songwriter told Billboard of the thematic similarities between the film and the "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" video.
