Famously, every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end. We've got one of those today with Semisonic returning for their first full-length album in over 20 years — previewed by new single, "The Rope."
Little Bit of Sun arrives November 3. It follows the band's 2020 comeback EP, You're Not Alone, but is their first LP since 2001's All About Chemistry. Around and in-between, frontman Dan Wilson has penned songs with the likes of Adele, Taylor Swift, Céline Dion, the Chicks, Chris Stapleton, Mitski and more.
Semisonic's album also features some high-profile collaborators, boasting appearances from Jason Isbell and My Morning Jacket's Jim James. Lori McKenna and Amy Allen co-wrote today's release, "The Rope," which follows previous singles "Little Bit of Sun" and "Grow Your Own."
"My approach as an artist has always been to write from where I am now," Wilson said in a press release. "It's been two decades since Semisonic made a full record together, so it was interesting to write from the perspective of returning to the band and finding it inspiring but very different. I couldn't help but think about the early days, about the formative influences that shaped and inspired us, but a lot of the songs are about the present moment in my life.
"I knew it was good, but I wasn't so sure 'The Rope' was a Semisonic song — until we ran through it in rehearsal and it roared from beginning to end like a freight train passing by," he added of the rousing, fanfare-heavy single. "The lyrics are like an ode to Los Angeles disguised as a breakup-with-regrets song — a lot of songwriters would love to break up with L.A. so it makes sense to me."
