After postponing its 2020 induction ceremony back in March, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has now outright cancelled the in-person event, opting for an online broadcast. The pre-recorded ceremony will now take place on November 7, streaming via HBO and HBO Max.
The event, which was originally scheduled to take place on May 2 in Cleveland, is going completely virtual for this year's edition. Chairman John Sykes explained in a statement that Inductee safety played a role in the decision.
"To protect the health and safety of our inductees, their families, crews and our attendees, we've made the decision that the scheduled live event is not possible," he said. "Together with HBO and executive producer Joel Gallen, we will still create an exciting program honouring our 2020 inductees, by telling the stories of their incredible contributions to music and impact on a generation of artists that followed them."
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has also announced plans to return to Cleveland in person for its 2021 induction ceremony.
As previously reported, the 2020 event was set to be broadcast on HBO, with Whitney Houston, Notorious B.I.G., Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, T. Rex and the Doobie Brothers all to be inducted this year.
