Red Kross have returned with details of a new album. The outfit led by brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald will share a self-titled double LP on June 28 via In the Red Records.
For the follow-up to 2019's Beyond the Door, the McDonalds called on Josh Klinghoffer — the ex-Chili Pepper and touring member of Pearl Jam and Jane's Addiction who records as Pluralone — to produce and play drums, as Melvins drummer Dale Crover was on the mend from spinal surgery.
"Josh is 13 years younger than me, and he's like the younger brother I never had," Steven explained in a release. "He's a super-talented musician who's really good at being supportive, and he's really in-tune with a band's internal dynamics. And he had us on our best behaviour, not wanting to disappoint Josh! His studio is like the most incredible vintage guitar shop — he would take great delight in pulling out some rare instrument or effects box to inspire us."
Opener "Candy Coloured Catastrophe" is the first of the double LP's 18 tracks to arrive, and you can hear it below alongside a Gilbert Trejo-directed video.
As Steven says, the song pokes at "the fine arts career of a well-known pop star who we love-love-love, and also love to make fun of." Jeff adds, "Our message is, 'What is art?' Who gets to decide? And maybe these rock stars who suddenly decide they're fine artists and Hollywood actors who decide they're punk-rock singers should, you know, stay in their lane."
Redd Kross will also hit the road on tour in North America this summer throughout July and August. Canadian dates come at Vancouver's Biltmore Cabaret and Lee's Palace in Toronto, and you can find the complete list of dates below. Tickets for all dates go on sale May 3 at 10 a.m. local time.
On top of the tour and album news, it's also Redd Kross's 45th anniversary as a group this year. They're also celebrating with a memoir titled Now You're One of Us, due in October, and the Andrew Reich-directed Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story currently making the rounds at film festivals.
