Prolific Vancouver songwriter Nicholas Krgovich is back with a new album, just a couple months on the heels of his collaborative Shabason, Krgovich & Harris project. The covers effort Pasadena Afternoon is out on December 4 through Moone Records, and Exclaim! has the premiere in advance.
Pasadena Afternoon was recorded in a single day in Los Angeles back in February. Billed under the name Nicholas Krgovich & Friends, it captures nine cover tunes that the small ensemble learned for a one-off live show.
The group perform tunes originally by Veda Hille, Marker Starling, Lake, Little Wings, Dear Nora, Ruth Garbus and Chris Cohen. The results aren't too far from Krgovich's own signature sound, with atmospheric ballads interspersed with the occasional R&B-flavoured slow jam ("Giving and Receiving"), twangy western epic ("Old Apocalypse") and smooth adult contemporary toe-tapper ("Bird and the Berry").
Hear Pasadena Afternoon below. It's being released digitally and in a limited run of cassettes.
