Delivering on a promise of new tunes in 2022, MUNA have announced plans to release a self-titled album through Phoebe Bridgers' Saddest Factory Records on June 24. Today, they've shared a new single from the effort, alongside a schedule of upcoming North American tour dates.
"What ultimately keeps us together is knowing that someone's going to hear each one of these songs and use it to make a change they need in their life," guitarist Josette Maskin said of the forthcoming batch of new tunes. "That people are going to feel a kind of catharsis, even if it's a catharsis that I might never have known myself, because I'm fucked up."
The album — which lists Exclaim!'s runner-up for Best Song of 2021, "Silk Chiffon," among its 11 tracks — is further previewed today by new single "Anything But Me," arriving alongside a music video directed by Ally Pankiw.
Here's what the band had to say about the track:
Breaking up is hard to do. In the past we've stayed in relationships for a long time, waiting until we hit low lows to admit it was over. "Anything But Me" is a song about leaving a partnership simply because it doesn't feel right. It's about trusting yourself and your instincts enough to walk away from someone while you still have love for each other and before it gets too bad.
The video for the song plays with the idea that we've been our own captors in relationships, keeping ourselves in unhealthy dynamics, maybe because that's what feels familiar. The song embodies the lightness and a playfulness that floods in when you realize that there's no lock on the door, no one's holding you back — you can untie the knot and skip into the sunset whenever you're ready. Now, who can guess what attachment style I have?
The Los Angeles trio will bring their latest effort on the road this year, with shows scheduled from May through to October (in addition to four SXSW performances on the agenda this week). The itinerary includes a lone Canadian stop at Toronto's Phoenix Concert Theatre on September 27. A full schedule of events can be found below, where you can also see the video for "Anything But Me" and MUNA's tracklisting.
