Maryze Announces Debut Album '8,' Shares Lead Single

Hear the Montreal pop artist's "Experiments" ahead of the LP

Exclaim! New Faves alum and Montreal's viral icicle-rater/bilingual queer pop princess Maryze has announced her debut album and shared an Ariana Molly-directed video for sultry lead single "Experiments."

8 is expected May 6 via Hot Tramp Records. It follows the previously released singles "Too Late" and "Squelettes" with Backxwash, both of which will also be included on the album.

As you might imagine from the title of its leading track, 8 is not afraid to experiment: the LP will see Maryze introduce herself by laying bare her influences rooted in myriad genres, "from emo and hyperpop to Celtic folk." You can expect a blend of maximalist electronic dance-pop and stripped-down R&B ballads, which aims to call listeners to consider the knotty tangle of our contradictions.

Falling into the former category, the Jeshway-produced "Experiments" makes a statement about sexuality and liberation in the form of a darkly seductive 2000s club banger. Taking cues from early Britney Spears and Nelly Furtado and of-the-moment Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek in equal measure, the single meshes palatial Timbaland-esque beats with Maryze's breathy vocal runs to truly hypnotic results.
