When Maryze and Backxwash dropped bilingual single "Squelettes" just over a year ago, the timing was perfect — not only did its spooky sound fit perfectly for the Halloween season, but days later, Backxwash won the Polaris Music Prize. Now, the Montreal duo have reunited for a haunting new video — and with Halloween 2021 mere days away, their timing remains impeccable.
The new clip, directed by Backwash's creative partner Méchant Vaporwave, finds Maryze singing her ethereal French vocals while dressed as an elf, sitting pensively on a rock while overlaid by apparitions of a fiery demise. Things take a gothic turn in time for Backxwash's scorching verses for a visually striking clip that is sure to put anyone in the Halloween spirit.
In a press release, Maryze said, "The song personifies addiction as a destructive entity that creeps in and takes hold, becoming inescapable, as well as the loss of self with lyrics like 'My face no longer looks like me, I've lost my shadow.' I was so blown away by the way Méchant Vaporwave brought that vision to life and how perfectly Backxwash's verse fit in. It was an honour to work with them!"
Both Maryze and Backxwash have kept busy in the year since "Squelettes" first dropped — Backxwash released her album I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses in June, while Maryze parlayed a viral video about rating icicles into a loyal TikTok following, and released '80s pop tune "Too Late" and hyperpop banger "FBP (Female Brad Pitt)" ahead of a forthcoming EP set for next spring via Hot Tramp.
