Canadian comic Mae Martin is an accomplished standup and actor — but now they're entering the world of music, and plan to release a debut album this year.
The Feel Good star announced the album on a recent appearance on WTF with Marc Maron. "I'm doing earnest [music]," they told Maron. "I'm putting out an album this year of the most mediocre, emotional songs."
They noted that the music is guitar-based and continued, "I'm embarrassed by it, and so I don't know how I'm ever going to promote it. I might just put it out quietly."
They went on to explain that they have a record label lined up to release the album. "It's fucked," they said. "I've always played music and played sad Elliott Smith covers and stuff. When I moved to L.A., I knew more musicians than comics out here, and so I did an album. If a musician listens to it, I think they'll be like, 'This is very mediocre.' But I think, hopefully, people who like me will get that it's an extension of [me]."
Martin has occasionally combined their comedy with music. They teamed up with fellow Canadian comedian Carolyn Taylor last year for "Love Is Pain" from Taylor's comedy doc I Have Nothing.
