Laura Veirs

"Sun Song" (video) / "America"

Though Portland folkster Laura Veirs's new Warp and Weft LP drops into stores August 20 through Raven Marching Band Records, you can sample a couple songs ahead of time via a video of the set's "Sun Song" and a stream of "America."

The previously teased "Sun Song" is a pedal-steel-and-symphony-strings-assisted slice of Americana, with Veirs sermonizing on the warm healing rays of the sun. The video, meanwhile, shows a series of blue skies shots of farmland, carnivals, and of Veirs relaxing underneath a tree with her acoustic guitar. Not seen, however, is guest singer Neko Case.

"America," which is now up for sale on iTunes and Bandcamp along with "Sun Song," somehow plays both more rockin' and relaxed, owing to its distortion-juice six-strings and heady mellotron runs. You can stream the track down below.

As previously reported, k.d. lang likewise leant a hand to the LP, and other guests appearing on Warp and Weft inlcude Jim James, Brian Blade and members of the Decemberists, among others. The record was co-produced between Veirs and longtime collaborator/producer/husband Tucker Martine. It's Veirs' first LP since her kids music-themed 2011 set Tumble Bee.
