Laura Sauvage

'Extraordinormal' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Mar 18, 2016

New Brunswick-born, Montreal-based musician Vivianne Roy stepped out solo from Les Hay Babies and made her debut as Laura Sauvage with last year's Americana Submarine EP, and now she's set to deliver the full-length follow-up.

Extraordinormal hears Roy working with bassist and co-producer Dany Placard, drummer Mathieu Vezio, guitarist Olivier Langevin and keyboard player Ben Bouchard to create 11 songs that came to fruition during a secluded week at Wild Studio in Saint-Zenon, QC.

The result is a blend of a '90s-inspired slacker rock sound and Roy's knack for cleverly stringing together lyrics. The song titles alone should give listeners an idea of the attitudes that are conveyed across the album, though attention-grabbing track titles like "Cyanide Breath Mint" (which is in fact a Beck cover),  "Jesus Wants to Be My Buddy" and "Fucker (Stole My Phone)" aren't just biting by name — that endearing brashness translates into the music. Showcasing both melodic, jangly indie rock tunes, as well as slightly harsher lo-fi fuzz-rock jams, Extraordinormal is an electrically charged and charming listen from start to finish.

Extraordinormal is out on March 25 through Simone Records, but you give the album an advanced listen in the player below right now.
