Joni Mitchell is releasing a live album. The legendary singer-songwriter has announced plans to put out her recent Newport Folk Festival performance as an LP.
Mitchell was a guest on the latest episode of Elton John's Apple Music 1 show, Rocket Hour. In it, John said, "People out there, you haven't heard things from the Newport Folk Festival yet, but I think there's going to be an album coming out of that, right?"
Mitchell replied, "Yeah, we're trying to put that out."
She went on to say that she didn't rehearse at all for the performance, which featured Brandi Carlile, Marcus Mumford, Wynonna Judd, Blake Mills, Taylor Goldsmith and Lucius.
She also discussed her instrumental rendition of "Just Like This Train," and said, "I couldn't sing the key. I've become an alto — I'm not a soprano anymore, so I couldn't sing the song. And I thought people might feel lighted if I just played the guitar part, but I like the guitar part to that song. So, anyway, it was very well received, much to my delight."
Mitchell's most recent album was 2007's Shine. In recent years, she has put out archival live albums recorded in the '60s. Her Newport set was her first full performance since 2000.
