Elton John Says a Concert Setlist Should Be a "Bit Like Having Sex"

Now well into his 70s, Elton John remains one of the highest-earning touring musicians on the planet. How does he do it? Aside from being a living legend (and going on perhaps the longest "farewell" tour of all time), John takes a sensual approach to his performances — right down to the setlist.

Ahead of headlining Glastonbury as the "final" UK date of his tour on Sunday (June 25), he sat down with BBC for an interview and revealed his belief that crafting the perfect succession of songs for a live show is comparable to sexual intercourse.

"When you put a setlist together, I always say it's a bit like having sex," John explained. "You start off really well, then you chill out a little bit, then towards the end of the show all hell breaks loose!"

And apparently he's planning on getting a little freaky at Glasto: "It's a different show to what people have been seeing," John said of his forthcoming festival performance. He explained that he's been playing "quite a lot of deep cuts" on the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour — but will be opening his headlining set with a song he hasn't played in around 10 years.

The pop icon admitted that he's a little nervous since it's his first time playing Glastonbury. Hopefully everyone will be gentle with each other!

After the festival this weekend, John will complete the remainder of the Farewell Yellow Brick Road dates. He currently has eight more shows scheduled, the last of which is on July 8 in Sweden.
