Delhi 2 Dublin opened the Rifftop Tent on the first park day of Rifflandia, and the turnout on an overcast, drizzly day was better than expected — this is Victoria, after all. The Vancouver-bred Bhangra and Celtic fusion act has always been a favourite in Victoria, and this show held particular significance since it coincided with the release of their latest album We're All Desi.
The combination of Bhangra and traditional Celtic music hears the dhol and tabla mingling with fiddle and synths; it sounds like a bit of a crapshoot, but the balance D2D strikes between each sonic element is electric. Playing their respective instruments in a strictly formed line, the five main members surged forward in dance, eventually pulling in more players from sidestage to participate in the set.
The group delivered a show filled with enthusiasm and nonstop crowd engagement that included stunts like pulling a floor tom into the audience and inviting onlookers to join in. Hell, they even managed to get 50-year-olds jumping in the crowd, cementing D2D as an opening act to remember.
