After more than a decade of outrage over M. Night Shyamalan's disastrous 2010 live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation, Netflix is attempting to right the wrongs of the past. The streaming giant released the first official teaser for their new ATLA series today, and fans can already tell that it's a far cry from Shyamalan's whitewashed flop.
Asian-Canadian and Indigenous Canadian actors are heavily represented on the cast — led by Vancouver's Gordon Cormier as Aang the Avatar — which was first showcased in October. The teaser provides a first look at Aang, Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) in action for the first time as they face off against Zuko (Dallas Liu), Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim).
The teaser also one-ups the previous adaptation attempt visually. The CGI produces some breathtaking imagery that does the original series justice.
After previously announcing that it was due out in 2024, Netflix has confirmed that the series will officially hit the platform on February 22. Watch the teaser below.
